Dear McLean Youth Basketball Community,

As many of you might already know, our father, Patrick Colliton, is seriously ill and needs your prayers and support.

Pat was in good health, working full time at Catholic Charities, until December 13th, 2015.  Pat was also a tremendous supporter of McLean Youth Basketball for more than 20 years.  Actively participating as a coach and referee.  Pat's booming voice and positive approach to life are legendary in McLean youth sports.

Unfortunately, after rushing to the hospital on December 13th with symptoms of a stroke, Pat was diagnosed with a glioblastoma of the right brain, a terminal form of brain cancer. During his second of three brain surgeries, the doctor was forced to remove the remaining, extremely vascular section of the tumor in order to save Pat’s life.  Unfortunately, it resulted in a right-sided stroke and total left side paralysis. He is unable to walk, sit up or even turn over without assistance.

After a few months in hospitals and rehab centers and extensive chemo and radiation therapies, we finally moved Pat back home on March 31, 2016.  Although everyone was happy to have him home, his paralysis has left him in need of 24/7 care as well as home modifications including a stair lift and a handicap accessible bathroom.

Luckily, despite his disabilities, his personality is still Pat and he has been a trooper, and fighter, keeping his faith alive in the face of unbelievable adversity. While the doctors have told us that the tumor will inevitably come back, his MRIs have shown no recurrence. The main issue has been the continued struggle with the paralysis, as well as the cognitive changes he continues to experience.  It has been a truly difficult process for us all.

As we have found out, many of the medical expenses, including the full time care giver, are not covered by insurance and are extraordinarily expensive. While we rejoice that Pat is still living nine months after his diagnosis, we are facing serious financial difficulties with the mounting medical bills. Many of Pat’s family and friends have already been incredibly generous and supportive during this time of need, and we want to thank them again for their kindness.

Our family has started a fund for Pat’s medical care, and we want to share with you, the information on how to donate if desired. The private link to the fundraising site is the following:

Any help you can give us is greatly appreciated. And please, if you know anyone who might be interested in helping, feel free to share the link and information with them. Thanks to everyone for all the continued love and support. Our family couldn’t be more grateful.

Sincerely,

Melinda Hall Colliton
