The GOALS of the Development League in McLean Youth Basketball are:

  • To encourage kids in the Greater McLean Community to play basketball.
  • To develop the skills and techniques necessary to play organized basketball.
  • To teach an appreciation for the rules of the game and to foster the development of sportsmanship.
  • To introduce the kids to team play and competitive games.
  • To provide education and assistance to volunteers to improve their skills as coaches.

NOTE: Players must be 6 by 31 Oct to participate in the League.

PLACEMENT OF PLAYERS ON TEAMS

There are no tryouts for the Development League. No player draft is used since we are focused on skill development, not trying to foster a competitive environment. All players that sign up for Development are placed on a team provided they are registered prior by 6 November. Those registering after this deadline will be placed on teams with available slots. If no slots exist, players will be wait-listed for any potential openings. Players not placed on a team prior to early January will receive a refund.

Coach or Teammate requests are not accepted after 6 November.

Players are placed on teams based on their stated preference for: (1) a particular coach, (2) to be on a team with particular players, or (3) to be on a team with players from a particular school. Players state their preference on their registration form. If no preference is indicated on the registration form then players will, when possible, be placed on teams with students from their school. All preferences, to the extent possible, will be taken into account when assigning players to teams. Parents should understand, however, that conflicts may arise (too many players ask for a particular coach or to play on a specific team) which would prevent us honoring a specific request.

The assignment of players to teams is at the sole discretion of the Chief Commissioner of the Development League and any individuals he/she asks to assist them in the process.
