Volunteer Roles
Our organization depends on multiple volunteers to run each volleyball season. The role descriptions below are primarily for running our girls season, where we serve over 800 student athletes each spring. Far less time is required for our boys season, with the Boys Comissioner and Director handling most of the work.
Please contact us at mcleanvb@gmail.com if you are interested in any of these positions! While we can't offer a single nickel of pay, we can absolutely offer a fun, rewarding experience in working with the other volunteers and helping hundreds of players learn and enjoy playing volleyball.
Role descriptions for league officials and coaches are below. Heading into the spring 2026 season, we currently need to fill the following positions:
- All 3 Select and Travel Commissioners (though it's very possible for one person to run both high school select and high school travel).
- Facilities Coordinator.
League Officials
- Select and Travel Commissioners - our three competitive divisions - middle school select, high school select, and high school travel - each require a commissioner to manage forming the teams in the league at the start of the season. The commitment is primarily during the last week of February and the first two weeks of March. Once the teams are formed and practices start, the Director can handle most issues that might arise. Forming teams includes: scheduling and running tryouts, callbacks, and the draft; communicating with players and parents to establish player practice availability; and communicating with players based on the results of tryouts and the draft. The Director supports each commissioner in accomplishing these tasks. The time commitment is 10 hours per week during the first two weeks of March, with little to no time required during the rest of the season.
- House Commissioner - this position is responsible for managing the creation of over 50 house teams each spring, including assigning volunteer coaches and assigning practice slots to coaches. The House Commissioner works closely with the Director for this work, with the vast majority of it occuring during March. The time commitment requires typically 5 to 10 hours per week during March, with the commitment being far less once the teams have been formed.
- Facilities Coordinator - this position is responsible for rescheduling team practices during the season when we inevitably lose access to a gym slot for a night. The Facilities Coordinator works with the Director and affected coaches to reschedule the practice for the coaches. The commitment is typically 1 to 2 hours per week during the season.
- Apparel Coordinator - this position is responsible for identifying league informs and designs, ordering apparel from established vendors, and distributing apparel to coaches. The commitment only involves time during the start of the season when teams are being established and apparel is needed for each team.
Coaching
- Head Coach / Co-Coach - Volunteer coaches are needed to manage youth teams in all leagues. The number of Head Coaches and Co-Coaching teams are a main factor in how many interested youth athletes can play each season. Head/Co-Coaches can either be adults or high school students. The commitment is a minimum of 3 hours per week: 1.5 hr practice plus 1 hr match. Responsibilities include communicating directly with players, families and league officials, establishing practice plans, and managing the team during practices and matches. Prior coaching and volleyball playing experience are a plus, but not required or adults. High school Head/Co-Coaching teams must have at least 2 years of volleyball playing experience and be a Sophomore, Junior or Senior. Training, mentoring and supporting materials are provided. Children of adult Head/Co-Coaches play for free. High school student Head/Co-Coaches can play in any MYA Volleyball league for free -- community service credits are available. If interested, fill out the appropriate coach registration form on the Registration page. As per MYA policy, a background check is required for adult coaches.
- Assistant Coach - In addition to Head/Co-Coaches, Assistant Coaches are another important factor in providing teams for all registered players. The target is to have at least 2 coaches on each team. Although not responsible for directly managing the team, Assistant Coaches provide support during practices and matches, and fill in for Head/Co-Coaches if needed. Assistant Coaches can either be adults or students. Adult head coaches are always assigned to the same team as their child(ren). Student Assistant Coaches can either be from high school (with any experienced) or middle school (with club experience). Training, mentoring and supporting materials are provided. Children of adult Assistant Coaches receive a 50% discount. High school student Assistant Coaches can play in any MYA Volleyball league for free -- community service credits are available. If interested, fill out the appropriate coach registration form on the Registration page. As per MYA policy, a background check is required for adult coaches.
